Winter

Ice Climbing

There are reliably good ice climbing conditions in the Chamonix valley from December-Febuary. It is a short journey from my home base to other great venues like Cogne(Italy), La Grave, or many places in Switzerland. Have a look at the Winter Photos album or some recent photos of an ice climbing trip to Cogne.

The best time is early febuary, it is not too cold (Ice is rather brittle when it is very cold!) but there is usually plenty of ice to climb. I would prefer not to set dates as I think this straight away puts people off when they can not make the dates. Please get in contact with me and tell me what dates would suit you and then I can organise the trip or course to suit you.

It is best for you if you can organise some friends who want to do some ice climbing as well. If this will be a first ice climbing experience I suggest up to 4 in a group. This allows a progression from easy top rope climbing to some multi pitch routes and if you want some lead climbing. I can organise another guide for the end of the week if you want to try some more challenging climbs.  If you have ice climbed before I suggest a 1:2 ratio. I recommend a course of a duration of 6 days. This makes it possible to organise with a week off work, and you shouldn’t get too exhausted! Please get in contact with me if you have any other ideas or locations in mind as I’m very willing to travel!

Prices

A Guiding Fee  of 360€ per day split between no of people on course/trip.
Accomodation with Half board is approximately 80€ per day per person on a twin share basis. This will vary according to dates locations etc.

Skiing

Next spring I’m hopeing for another trip to East Greenland. I have been there Heliskiing in 2012 and 2013, and it has fantastic ski terrain and conditions. Kevin, Jeff and I are planning to expand the operation to include a ski touring trip this season (End of April- until early May 2015). Please look at the link  Greenland Heliskiing and get in contact with myself or Kevin if you have questions.

I am planning various Off Piste Ski Courses and Ski Touring trips next winter. Again I would prefer to leave the dates up to you. I’ve just given an approximate date for when conditions are best or huts are open. Some options are:-

  • Haut Route (Chamonix-Zermatt). For experienced Ski Tourers. 7 days. April or early May . Probably the most famous ski tour in the world. Consequently often very busy. I need some notice to get the hut bookings.
  • Hoch Tirol ski traverse. This is the best ski tour in the world! A superb mountain traverse that finishes with the highest mountain in Austria (Grossglockner 3798m),with long ski descents and fantastic Austrian hospitality! For experienced Ski Tourers. 6 days. April.
  • Introduction to Ski Touring in the Silvretta range Austria. March or April. Some off piste ski experience useful. 4-6 days.
  • Dolomites Ski Safari. For strong skiers with some touring experience. 7 days.February. A trip of a lifetime…check out the photos in the ‘Dolomites Ski Safari’ Album! A traverse right through the heart of the Dolomites from west to east. Starting from Passo Rolle, through the Pale group, across the Marmolada, down the famous Val di Mesti in the Sella group, through the Fane group to Cortina, Up to a saddle on Monte Cristallo and finally traversing under the famous Tres Cime!
  • Off piste weeks in Davos/Klosters Switzerland or Dissentis/Andermatt.  4-6 days. Any experience level. February.
